The dust can be used in different ways. If you have it there, you can use to buy items from the npc (but i wouldn't do that since the items don't come with a very good %, are more like a starting thing). The best use is from the bag itself, and you can use them to upgrade your crafted items. To remove it from there you can right click over some dust in your bag and select the right option to pull it out.
