There are 4 Martyr skills
using each of them level your martrys level (= vigor bonus)
your martyrs level equals your chars level
martyr has 5 stages
1 to 4 are gained automatically by leveling martyr and 5 needs to be obtained by chest from itemshop (100 symbols = level 5 for some time, do this cumulatively and it will be a breeze)

All of the following skills comsume myrrh (buy from servant of light NPCs), the higher the level is ther more myrrh they consume!
Purple skill

1 - Heal up your HP - 30 sec cooldown (and former mana, this is gone now)
2 - short cd (i dont really remember)

3 - no more cd and faster execution
Yellow skill
1 - Restore HP
2 - Restore more hp or shorter cd (i dont really remember)
3 - Restore more hp or shorter cd (i dont really remember)
Green skill
1 - Restore mana / engergy (now classresources so depends on what class you play)
2 - Restore more mana or shorter cd (i dont really remember)
3 - Restore more mana or shorter cd (i dont really remember)
Orange skill
1 - Break controleffect
2 - Shorter CD (i dont really remember)
3 - used to break CC and reverse its effect - this is gone so this skill has become pretty worthless, now it grants short immunity or something inferior
ninja-devaluationg skills like this is not OK and ruins gameexperience - i would have never bothered getting this - only reason to get this was to reverse the CC

level 2 skills+higher grant a small amount of myrrh to party IIRC

Verdict
level your martyr to gain the vigor bonus
get purple rank 3 ("Lithania") so you can level it faster, cheap avalable in auctions

all the others are fine by default

dont waste resources on higher levels
the green one you never really need
i see them like:

purple = regen
yellow = "healthpotion"
orange = break CC

there is cash shop item that makes it lvl 2 then lvl 3, Id suggest getting highest lvl and I think if u get r3 u get r2 effect aswell if im not mistaken or maybe it was just lvl 2 highest

It does restore 20% of your base hp. Base means without bonus from gear stats so yes - healing from this skill is useless.
Martyr's Gift r3 - Abiding Light - has bonus effect 30% dmg reduction for 5s which is reason to use it.

this whole base hp thing is what fails in allods so much atm
same thing is ruining heal from mount / assaultshell and so on
