Changing stats and upgrading gears

Let's say that:

1) You use a rare insigna of brutality for exemple, to change a stat on a blue gear.

2) You upgrade this changed blue gear to epic.

The question is: does the changed stat (brutality) remain after the upgrade or is it reinitialized (and then do you have to re-use an epic insignia to re-change your stat to brutality)?
