for healer there are lots of possible ways to play as you already found out
assault
-> melee
-> caster
support with focus on
-> killing (ranged / melee / mixed)
-> hybrid
-> healing
heal
this class can "never" have enough rubies as its not as limited as others are
as melee you can decide to NOT take everything related to particle of light and instead use chain of light as only ranged attack which will heal you save rubies & talentpoints
2nd grind down + 1st grid left / right are all the things related to survivability
for PVP the "trick" is to balance betwen killing and healing yourself, if you play concentrated you wont die in an equal 1 vs 1 vs any other class
determination is seldom useful in PVP (new rubies in 3rd grid)
when you lern the defense talent + take the rubies in 1st grid left which grant you this buff if you use circle of healing you likely have to sacrifice rubies from damage
you can either discard the vulnearability buff (2nd grid upper right) or reduce the % bonus from various dmgrubies
aside from all that, its funny as a healer in assaultaspect with 3 buttons (chain of light, heavenly smite and 1 heal) to constantly spam chain of light into the crowd and see how everything ignites and you reach top dps
