A vanilla server

What's the chance of getting a level 40 patch? Then slowly going up? Like blizzard just announced vanilla for WoW. I know for a fact that I would (and a lot of others) love that

Try starting a Kickstarter project then.

Start budget of AO was $11mil.

I think if "you and a lot of others" gather 20-40% of that budget on Kickstarter, you could then make a nice mutually beneficial partnership offer to AOTeam to open such a server.
