Jolly Roger Bay Hyaenas

Is there a trick to getting the keys off the hyaenas at Jolly Roger Bay, or do you just have to be able to fight off the swarm of pirates that come at you when you attack hyanea and guard? Not sure what the barrel of smoke is supposed to accomplish.

Use the smoke barrel on the hyenas to blind them. If you don'T do it they will call for the pirates, I think.

Thanks. That makes sense. I was able to do it the hard way by focusing on the hyaena and grabbing the key when he died. If you run for the gate and open it, the pirates won't follow you through. I'm not sure squishier classes would have too much luck with that.
