Cheap prof.

I think the best profession for begginer is herbalisam. You don't need a lot of gold to lvl up. I got blacksmithing , and to lvl up from 50-54 skill lvl i spent 4k gold. That's not cheap. If you don't have gold , don't take blacksmithing .

Starting out with a prof capable of proving you with gear option's as you level is going to help you progress faster, and by making the items necessary to level rep with that prof every 10 level's you eventually gain a second prof that focuses on you're finances. I took LW,Alchemy, and Weaponsmith before patch to be ready, and the only thing I would like to get across is to Alchemy.. if you are out there watching,....I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you. Neft it.

Sincerely,
You're Carpal Tunnel Survivor.

My observations:

* All professions are expensive to level up.
* Alchemy felt more expensive than either Tailoring or Weaponsmithing.
* As has been said, in your first profession, remember to make the reputation-lifting items (Shawls, saws?, phlogiston potions, etc.) to get the right to buy a second-profession certificate for gold. At profession levels 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 (approx), you get a new item you can make. The level 10 item will take your rep to 5000, the level 20 to 10000, and so on, each time by +100 points per item (plus rep bonuses). You'll need to get 25000 rep to by the certificate.
* 4k gold at levels 50-54 isn't as bad as it sounds, because you do it in smaller bites (on the first profession), and gold isn't that scarce at those levels.
* Tailoring 55->56 cost me an eyewatering amount per item made (buying 56 reels of thread per item for a purple-recipe shirt), but I only had to make two of them. (And I got "blue" for both! They were competitive with my legendary shirt of the midday sun in terms of stats.)
* Levelling up the second and (if you do it) third professions is a bit daunting in terms of cost because you are normally at least level 50 when you get them, so you have to play "catch-up", spending enough to raise them 50 levels...
* When levelling up the first profession, do it piecemeal to reduce the financial pain.

I'm on an extended break from Allods at the moment, but I'm lurking here to keep up with what's happening. From the looks of things in 5.0.02, I'm better off where I am.

weaponsmithing is the most expensive

i got all atm, but i started with alchemy because is more usefull and you can make pots and sell in AH for really nice prices, the other crafts require alot more time for crafting 1 item and they're annoying especially when you try to do a specific item

alchemy also has a quest at lvl 60 called highest art of alchemy that rewards you with amalgam; amalgam will be sellable at any point in the game cuz everybody needs it to upgrade gear

Oops, yes, I forgot about that quest. It used to be a level 51 (?)quest, so I have it on my main character even though she's only level 56. The other thing that raises the effective cost of weaponsmithing (but not necessarily the armour professions) is that lots of recipes produce *bound* items. Weaponsmithing pretty much guarantees that three-quarters of the recipes produces bound items that you can't use (e.g. swords, axes, hammers for a summoner...), so you have to sell them to a merchant. Bah. :cursing:  :cursing: ?(

Actually it is not so expensive to level proffesions. Now with reduced cost of component from npc it is even less expensive.

* As has been said, in your first profession, remember to make the reputation-lifting items (Shawls, saws?, phlogiston potions, etc.) to get the right to buy a second-profession certificate for gold. Another reason to work on repotation is few % discount on npc reagent price and tools you get at 10k (trusted) and 25k (respected) league Crafter's Guild reputation.

Quoted

* 4k gold at levels 50-54 isn't as bad as it sounds, because you do it in smaller bites (on the first profession), and gold isn't that scarce at those levels.

4k gold to level blacksmith from 50 to 54 is really bad... at worst case possible - no single success in crafting all way - it should consume 917 hardcoal if done properly. It makes just 1.7k g and you probably will get around 100-150g for items you craft. Any successful attempt significantly reduces cost.

Quoted

* Tailoring 55->56 cost me an eyewatering amount per item made (buying 56 reels of thread per item for a purple-recipe shirt), but I only had to make two of them. (And I got "blue" for both! They were competitive with my legendary shirt of the midday sun in terms of stats.)

Usually it is around 1k gold per epic item average but those items have really good stats so it is worth a shot.

Quoted

* Levelling up the second and (if you do it) third professions is a bit daunting in terms of cost because you are normally at least level 50 when you get them, so you have to play "catch-up", spending enough to raise them 50 levels...

It is not so bad in terms of cost. Much worse is amount of time you need to do all this crafting.

Leveling blacksmith from start to 38 costs ~0-20g plus around ~120g for tools you need for those levels,

38-48 is ~200g plus ~800g for tools at 42,

48-55 should be ~600g,

55-60 ~600-1000g depending on luck and attempts to get epics for use while leveling.

It makes ~2.5-3k gold to level blacksmith 1-60. Reagent prices at npc makes tailor, leatherworker and weaponsmith ~1.5x more expensive.

Not sure about low level alchemy cost but 55-60 is only ~550g what makes it cheapest or second cheapest proffession at last 5 levels. And probably most usefull.

Well actually it's the same for leather, smith and tailoring :)
You need to get extra recipes to craft unbound items ;)
Most of the items are bound too ^_^
Oh, sure, but at least I can use (most of) the bound Tailoring items I make. The main exception is capes, because only Tailors can make capes, and they make specialist capes that e.g. modify warrior stats (yes, this is a pre-5.0 discussion - I've only made two tailored items since 5.0 came out, and they were shirts) and can't (couldn't) be worn by summoners.

Well, until I tried making stuff to help out a friend who came in to start playing as a summoner like me. That was frustrating because most of the stuff I wanted to make was bound. ;(

How long does it take (ingame) to level a profession from 1-60?
Assuming you only buy items from NPC to level? For lets say, Leatherworker?

And is there a guide somewhere on how to do it?
Im interested in taking Leatherworker, but have 0 experience with professions up till now.

If you only need to buy vendor mats, it's just the time to do the clicking - should be less than 1h for sure to do 1-60, probably less than 30min.

But you need lots of those crafter chests that drop from mobs, materials found inside to be exact. You can downgrade those (the materials, not chests) to lower level with Vial of Retroform.

(1) Non-alchemy professions are a bit like a pub slot machine. You have five bars that can be grey, green, blue, or purple. You are (by default) allowed to reroll twice with three holds that can be placed to lock a bar.
(2) Grey bars are worthless and if you have any in your result you get junk. Five-bar colour matches are the best (purple better than blue better than green).
(3) At each stage, you should buy the relevant toolkit and at the very minimum the tool upgrades that block grey bars (guarantees getting something possibly useful), give an extra reroll (tends to improve results), and allow you to lock four bars when rerolling (useful for retrying just the last bar to get a 5-match).
(4) You can't get profession-level X before having character-level X, so to get to level 60 Leatherworker, you must get to level 60 character. Try to keep your profession caught up as you level up your character, to avoid sudden financial pains.
(5) Most of the materials you need (except NPC-available stuff like e.g. thread for Tailors) drop from killed mobs (Tailoring, Leatherworking for raw materials, non-Alchemy for special stuff like buttons) or are gathered from the environment (Blacksmithing, Alchemist, Weaponsmith) and can be found in the auction house, so "only buy items from NPC" means it will be impossible.

Time taken from learning the profession to being level 60, assuming your character is already level 60? If you have a ready supply of cash, and enough people are supplying the AH, it's just an exercise in tedium over a few hours, but the financial aspect is a bit scary - think thousands and thousands of gold.

Further note: the "thousands and thousands of gold" part can be mitigated by going out and gathering resources. For T and LW that means killing mobs for their craft drops and their crafting chests. For BS and WS, you mine metals (non-BS/WS can't even see these resources) and kill mobs for their crafting chests. Alchemists gather herbs and buy supplementary resources from the craft NPC.

For a new player a profession is NOT valuable in ANY way!

the time and gold it costs will NEVER be worth it

you get better items from quests and alchemy potions give so little advantage its not worth too

only reason for using profession is as an endgame player, so i rcommand play until level 60, then learn a profession is you need it, otherwise build runes with the gold you save, thats more worth!

"in ANY way" and "NEVER" are so strong phrases and I dont think its that black/white.

If youre short on gold, then you might wanna skip the professions (for now). And spending gold on runes is always a good idea.

But if youre not short of gold, then take a profession or two. They are usefull. And its more fun to have them along the way making stuff that yo can use rather than having to sit for hours lvling them up when youre lvl 60 and none of the stuff you make will have any use untill you make lvl 57+ stuff.

I've got a question. My char lvl is 32 and alchemy lvl 31 and I don't get the reputation quest from the guy in Nezebgrad anymore. Crafter reputation is at 12600/25000. Any idea why I don't get the quest?

1. Make (and use) level 30 phlogiston potions until your rep is 15000
2. Level your character and alchemy up to 40
3. Make and use level 40 phlogiston potions until your rep is 20000
4. Level your character and alchemy up to 50
5. Make and use level 50 phlogiston potions until your rep is 25000

Then you can complete the second-profession quest and shell out 475-5% (-5% more if you have the Veteran badge for 1 year's service) gold for the certificate.

Um... it's been a looong while since I've played last. Back then you could only level your reputation with this daily quest I've mentioned. So they took this quest out and I just have to craft these potions and use them to get my reputation higher? That's nice. Thanks a lot. :D

i used strong phases by choice, because it is that way

if you have nothing else useful to use your gold for do it at max level with helper collecting books, then you are done in ~ 30 min, and just sell the useless non-max-level- crap to the npc

the only good thing is that he prices of the fixed items from the NPC got lowered now, so its not EXTREMELY expensive anymore, only pretty useless

Thank you for such a valuable information. I have been searching for it for a long time and finally found it. If you want to use an essay writing help then the one Edubirdie offers is excellent https://edubirdie.com/creative-writing-service . I am not strong with English written text, so using this site was a blessing. The ordering process took less than 5 minutes! The essay was of very good quality.
